University of Basrah Organizes a Workshop on the Art of Meaning Management in the Age of Media Conflict
The Basra and Arabian Gulf Studies Center at the University of Basrah, in cooperation with the Center for Development and Continuing Education, organized a workshop entitled "When Geopolitics Speaks: The Art of Meaning Management and How States Construct Their Narratives in the Age of Media Conflict." The workshop was attended by faculty members, researchers, and those interested in political and media affairs.
The workshop aimed to highlight a range of influential rhetorical tools that shape public awareness, most notably framing, reframing, securitization, lexical choice, metaphor, strategic ambiguity, and moral positioning. These tools are considered effective mechanisms for redefining events within targeted semantic contexts that serve specific narratives.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Iyad Mohammed Aboud, included an in-depth linguistic analysis of the mechanisms of meaning production in contemporary geopolitical discourse. It focused on deconstructing the rhetorical structures in the political interviews under study and revealing the linguistic strategies that contribute to shaping public perception and constructing national narratives.
The workshop emphasized that political discourse not only reflects reality but also contributes to its creation and reconstruction.
