University of Basrah Organizes a Seminar on Migration and its Social and Economic Repercussions
The Central Library at the University of Basrah, in cooperation with the General Directorate of Education in Maysan, organized a seminar on migration and its social and economic repercussions.
The seminar aimed to shed light on the motives and causes of migration and to explain its effects on the individual and society from both the social and economic perspectives of the sending and receiving countries.
The seminar, presented by Dr. Ammar Abdul-Ridha Mahoud, included a definition of migration and the difference between it and displacement. It also addressed the reasons for rural-to-urban migration in Iraq from 1940 to 2026, as well as a discussion of the most prominent objectives of migration and its negative and positive effects, such as the search for better job opportunities and improved living standards. Furthermore, it reviewed migration's repercussions, such as its impact on family relationships and social structures, and the methods used to mitigate the effects of migration, including the potential brain drain.
