University of Basrah Organizes a Lecture on the Aesthetics of Semantic Development
The Center for Development and Continuing Education at the University of Basrah, in cooperation with the College of Education for Women, organized a scientific lecture entitled “The Aesthetics of Semantic Development: The Journey of Words Between Death and Rebirth.”
The lecture aimed to explore how word meanings evolve over time, the factors influencing such changes, and the role of technology in generating new vocabulary.
Delivered by Dr. Ashwaq Ghazi Al-Yasiri, the lecture addressed key concepts such as linguistic death and the emergence of new expressions, supported by illustrative examples. It also examined mechanisms of semantic change, including narrowing, broadening, semantic elevation, and degeneration.
The session witnessed active academic engagement from attendees, who emphasized the importance of language in keeping pace with evolving knowledge landscapes.
