The University of Basrah Organizes a Panel Discussion on the Water Crisis in Basrah
The Basrah and Arabian Gulf Studies Center at the University of Basrah organized a panel discussion entitled “The Water Crisis in Basrah Governorate: From Current Challenges to Sustainable Solutions,” with the participation of a number of researchers, academics, and individuals concerned with environmental and water-related issues.
The panel aimed to shed light on the underlying causes of the water crisis and its health, environmental, and economic repercussions, as well as to address the most prominent challenges facing the water sector in the governorate.
During the session, Dr. Muslim Khuraibit delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the key manifestations of the crisis, notably the shortage of fresh water, rising salinity levels, and increasing pollution. These issues were attributed to a combination of external factors, including the reduced flow of water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, as well as internal factors such as poor water resource management, weak infrastructure, and the impacts of climate change.
The panel concluded with a set of recommendations emphasizing the need to adopt sustainable solutions to address the crisis. These include improving water resource management, reducing water wastage, upgrading infrastructure, enhancing water treatment processes, and strengthening regional cooperation to ensure a fair share of water resources. It also highlighted the importance of raising public awareness regarding water conservation.
