A Doctoral Dissertation at the University of Basrah Explores Sustainable Water Resources Management in Iraq
A doctoral dissertation at the College of Engineering, University of Basrah, examined the sustainable management of water resources in the Euphrates River basin in Iraq using the RIBASIM model.
The dissertation, submitted by the student Zainab Hussein Khairallah, aims to evaluate the sustainable management of the Euphrates River and to ensure water, food, energy, and environmental security across western, central, and southern Iraq. This was achieved through analyzing the river’s capacity to meet the water demands of various consuming sectors.
Comprising five chapters, the dissertation addressed the development of adaptation measures to climate change and the reduction of water inflows from upstream countries. It emphasized that integrated water resources management, based on scenario planning and enhanced efficiency, is essential for strengthening water security and sustainability within the Euphrates River basin.
