The University of Basrah Organizes a Workshop on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
The College of Dentistry at the University of Basrah organized a workshop on “Systemic Lupus Erythematosus” as part of its ongoing efforts to promote medical awareness and keep pace with recent scientific developments in the field of complex autoimmune diseases.
The workshop aimed to advance scientific understanding of systemic lupus erythematosus and its intricate immunological mechanisms, contributing to the development of early diagnostic approaches and the adoption of precise therapeutic strategies. It also sought to improve patients’ quality of life and enhance the overall standard of healthcare delivery.
The workshop featured a lecture delivered by lecturer Hiba Al-Rahman Riyadh, who explained that the disease develops as a result of a complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors, alongside the body’s impaired ability to clear apoptotic cells. This, in turn, leads to the activation of the innate immune system through the type I interferon pathway, which represents a central component in the pathogenesis and progression of the disease.
