University of Basrah Organizes a Seminar on Plant Tissue Culture
The Palm Research Center at the University of Basrah organized a seminar entitled "Modern Technology and its Research Prospects in Multiple Sciences."
The seminar aimed to highlight the importance of plant tissue culture and its role in plant propagation, particularly date palms, as well as its research applications in the agricultural, environmental, and pharmaceutical fields.
The seminar, presented by Dr. Khayoun Ali Mohsen, addressed the scientific principles of plant tissue culture, types of tissue cultures, and stages of tissue propagation. It also discussed the main challenges hindering this process and reviewed the role of this technology in environmental conservation, increasing vegetation cover, conserving water, and combating diseases.
The seminar also touched upon the production of artificial seeds and flowers in the laboratory, as well as the production of secondary compounds such as phenols, terpenes, and alkaloids, and their importance in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, medical, veterinary, and industrial industries.
At the end of the session, the researcher reviewed the most prominent challenges facing plant tissue culture, including microbial contamination, high costs, and a shortage of equipment and expertise. He presented a set of recommendations that included supporting applied research, conducting training courses, and strengthening institutional cooperation.
