University of Basrah Organizes Workshop on Diagnostic and Therapeutic Principles for Managing Gummy Smile
The College of Dentistry at the University of Basrah organized a workshop titled “Diagnostic and Therapeutic Principles for Managing Gummy Smile,” as part of its academic programs aimed at developing students’ skills and enhancing their scientific and clinical competencies.
The workshop aimed to strengthen both scientific and clinical understanding of this condition by accurately diagnosing its underlying causes and enabling participants to select and apply appropriate treatment approaches for each case, thereby achieving effective aesthetic and functional outcomes while preserving the health of the supporting dental tissues.
The workshop included a lecture delivered by Lecturer Sura Abdul Karim Abdullah, in which she discussed the concept of gummy smile as one of the common conditions in cosmetic dentistry. The lecture also highlighted the main treatment options, including orthodontic interventions to improve occlusion, gingivectomy and clinical crown lengthening procedures, as well as the use of botulinum toxin (Botox) injections or lip repositioning surgery, and, in advanced cases, orthognathic surgical intervention.
