The University of Basrah Organizes a Workshop on Soil and Water Management
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a workshop entitled “Soil and Water Management Using Geographic Information Systems Techniques.”
The workshop aimed to enable participants to apply spatial analysis tools to address issues related to water scarcity, soil degradation, and the sustainable use of natural resources.
Delivered by Dr. Ayman Abdul Latif Kuwais, the workshop covered the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in natural resource management, including an introduction to GIS, data types, and sources of spatial data related to soil and water, such as digital maps, remote sensing, and elevation models. It also addressed methods for spatial soil analysis and the production of maps illustrating soil distribution, salinity, water table levels, and slope gradients, in addition to erosion assessment using the USLE model within a GIS environment.
The workshop further explored the simulation of climate change impacts and urban expansion on soil and water resources, as well as the creation of interactive maps to support informed decision-making.
