The University of Basrah Organizes a Training Course on Organizing Information Resources in Descriptive Cataloging
The Central Library Secretariat at the University of Basrah, in cooperation with the College of Arts, organized a training course on organizing information resources in descriptive cataloging within libraries.
The course aimed to introduce the importance of catalog card preparation, whether traditional or electronic, in accordance with the Resource Description and Access (RDA) standard for books and institutional materials. It also sought to facilitate cataloging practices for library personnel and highlight the significance of cataloging maps in libraries and information centers to enhance the professional competencies of staff working in cataloging.
Delivered by Dr. Amal Abdulrahman Abdulwahid and lecturer Tariq Taha Abboud, the course covered methods for preparing various catalog cards for maps, including the main entry, general designation, parallel and secondary titles, issuing authority, pagination data, notes, follow-up details, and catalog card dimensions. It also introduced the MARC 21 standard and its primary fields, while explaining how to create comprehensive bibliographic records incorporating tags, indicators, and subfields.
