The University of Basrah Organizes a Workshop on the Subtropical High-Pressure System
The College of Education for Women at the University of Basrah organized a scientific workshop entitled “Changes in the Frequency and Persistence of Subtropical High-Pressure Centers at the 500 hPa Level over Iraq for the Period (1973–2023).”
The workshop aimed to examine variations in the frequency and duration of these pressure systems and to highlight their relationship with climate change and its impact on atmospheric patterns.
The workshop included the presentation of research papers which, through the analysis of synoptic weather maps, indicated an increase in the frequency and duration of these systems, particularly during transitional seasons, as a result of the expansion and intensified activity of the Hadley Cell. The studies also noted an increase in the geopotential values of these systems due to temperature changes, leading to a greater thickness of the subtropical high-pressure system at the 500 hPa level.
