University of Basrah Organizes Workshop on Environmental Sustainability
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a workshop entitled "Environmental Sustainability: The Use of Bacterial Bacteriophages in Wastewater Treatment."
The workshop aimed to enable participants to design a protocol for the safe use of bacteriophages and evaluate their effectiveness against targeted bacteria in wastewater, taking into account regulatory and biosafety considerations.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Raghad Shabar Jaafar and Dr. Sattar Aziz Ghamis, included an introduction to the definition of bacteriophages and their mechanism of action, which involves attaching to and disrupting bacterial cells. It also addressed the challenges of traditional wastewater treatment, including antibiotic resistance and persistent microbial contamination, and discussed the applications of bacteriophages in treatment.
The workshop focused on targeting dangerous bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella while reducing biological pollutants without the use of harmful chemicals.
The presentations emphasized the need to study the stability of bacteriophages in the environment and to avoid bacterial resistance, while integrating them with other green technologies (such as biofilms).
