The University of Basrah Organizes a Seminar on Domestic Violence
The University Counseling Center at the University of Basrah, in collaboration with the University of Information Technology and Communications, organized an online seminar entitled “Domestic Violence: A Phenomenon Threatening Family Stability and Societal Well-being.”
The seminar aimed to raise awareness of the risks, forms, and consequences of domestic violence, as well as to promote family and social stability through education and guidance.
The session, delivered by Dr. Heba Majeed Essa, addressed the concept of domestic violence as a harmful behavior occurring within the family environment and directed toward one of its members. It was highlighted as a phenomenon that takes multiple forms, negatively affecting family stability and weakening interpersonal relationships within the household.
The seminar further examined the main types of domestic violence, including emotional abuse such as humiliation, psychological pressure, social isolation, surveillance, and control, as well as financial and legal harm. It also discussed physical, verbal, and economic violence. In addition, the causes of domestic violence were explored, pointing to several contributing factors, including difficult economic conditions, psychological stress, limited awareness and family education, inadequate parenting practices, and internal family conflicts.
The seminar also highlighted the resulting impacts, including psychological effects such as anxiety and depression, physical consequences such as injuries, social repercussions such as family disintegration, and economic effects reflected in reduced income and increased financial burdens.
