University of Basrah Organizes Workshop on the Principles of Water Sampling
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a workshop entitled “Principles of Water Sampling in Variable-Discharge Channels.”
The workshop aimed to enable participants to collect representative and reliable water samples from variable-discharge channels such as seasonal rivers and irrigation canals, in a manner that ensures the accuracy of analytical results despite fluctuations in water flow velocity and water levels.
The workshop, delivered by Dr. Abdulzahra Abdulrasool Al-Hilu, addressed the challenges of variable discharge and its impact on the distribution of pollutants and sediments. It also discussed methods for designing sampling plans, including the selection of sampling locations, depths, and time intervals, in addition to the use of integrated sampling devices (composite samples) and point sampling techniques. The lecture further covered calibration methods adapted to changes in flow velocity and water levels, such as multi-point measurements, as well as sample preservation, documentation, and transportation procedures to ensure sample integrity.
