University of Basrah Organizes Scientific Field Trip to Jabal Sanam in Safwan District
A scientific team from the Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah conducted a field trip to Jabal Sanam.
The trip aimed to carry out a specialized geological study to gain a deeper understanding of the rock strata, analyze geological phenomena such as erosion and sedimentation, collect rock samples, and record field measurements.
The scientific team, comprising Dr. Hassan Khalil Hassan, Dr. Ayman Abdul Latif Kuwais, and Dr. Rafid Nouri Rajab, emphasized the importance of understanding the geological history of the region. They highlighted the value of Jabal Sanam as an open-field natural laboratory that exposes rock formations originating from depths exceeding five kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface. The team also called for the site to be designated as a national Geopark to safeguard it from urban expansion and environmental degradation.
