University of Basrah Organizes Workshop on Environmental Assessment of Oil and Gas Projects
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a workshop entitled “Environmental Assessment of Oil and Gas Projects.”
The workshop aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to conduct Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies for exploration, production, and processing projects in the oil and gas sector. It focused on ensuring compliance with national and international environmental standards while minimizing adverse impacts on ecosystems and local communities.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Zainab Jawdat Musa, covered the concept of environmental assessment and its various types, including strategic, preliminary, and detailed assessments. It also addressed the legal framework and relevant national and international regulations, including the standards of the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
In addition, the workshop identified critical environmental activities associated with the different stages of oil and gas projects, including seismic surveys, well drilling, construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. It examined potential environmental impacts such as oil spills, gas emissions, gas flaring, noise, vibrations, produced water management, and drilling cuttings.
The workshop further introduced environmental assessment methodologies, including the use of checklists, interaction matrices such as the Leopold Matrix, and environmental modeling techniques to predict pollutant dispersion. It also discussed the development of Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), incorporating mitigation, monitoring, and review measures, as well as emergency response strategies for fire control, spill management, and post-closure rehabilitation. Particular emphasis was placed on stakeholder consultation, assessment of socio-economic impacts, and grievance management mechanisms.
