University of Basrah Organizes Workshop on Using Bioremediation Technology for Contaminated Soil
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a workshop entitled "Using Bioremediation Technology for Soil Contaminated with Petroleum Hydrocarbons."
The workshop aimed to introduce participants to the latest environmentally friendly technologies for treating oil pollution, which rely on the use of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi to break down hazardous hydrocarbon compounds and convert them into non-toxic substances.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Ahmed Jari Shbeeb, covered the fundamentals of bioremediation, explaining the mechanisms by which microorganisms analyze pollutants, diagnose pollution, collect samples, and assess the degree of soil contamination. It also introduced techniques such as biostimulation through the addition of nutrients and bioenrichment through the addition of specific bacterial strains. The workshop reviewed successful local and regional experiences in treating contaminated soil and emphasized that biotechnology represents a sustainable and cost-effective solution compared to traditional methods.
