University of Basrah Strengthens Scientific Cooperation with the General Company for Ports of Iraq to Support the Maritime and Environmental Sectors
As part of its commitment to strengthening partnerships with national institutions, the University of Basrah, through the Marine Science Center, explored opportunities for joint scientific and research cooperation with the General Company for Ports of Iraq. This came during an official visit by the Director General of the Center, Dr. Abdul Amir Rahim Jasim, to the company’s headquarters in Basrah Governorate, accompanied by the Director of the Marine Consultancy Office. They were received by the Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Mr. Alaa Abdul Hassan Al-Akeeli.
During the meeting, both parties discussed mechanisms for enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest, particularly marine pollution monitoring, oil spill response and mitigation, and the conduct of specialized environmental studies and analyses.
The two sides emphasized the importance of supporting applied research projects aimed at protecting the marine environment and promoting the principles of sustainability. They also highlighted the need to address various forms of environmental pollution and to utilize academic expertise and capabilities in support of Iraq’s maritime sector.
