Under the Direction of the Prime Minister, University of Basrah Organizes a Symposium on the Economic Crisis in Iraq
The University of Basrah, in cooperation with the Standing Committee for Community Awareness and Guidance at the Prime Minister's Office, organized a symposium on practical solutions to the economic crisis in Iraq. The symposium was attended by members of Parliament and presidents of public and private universities in Basra Governorate.
During his opening remarks, University President Dr. Muhannad Jawad Kadhim Al-Asadi stated, "The increasing economic challenges in Iraq necessitate a concerted national effort and the integration of scientific perspectives and practical expertise to arrive at realistic and sustainable solutions."
He added, "The economic crisis is not merely a financial challenge; it is a multifaceted developmental issue linked to the future of generations and the state's ability to achieve comprehensive development, provide job opportunities, improve services, and enhance social stability."
He emphasized, "The symposium produced a set of visions and recommendations that will contribute to supporting decision-makers and open new horizons for cooperation between academic institutions, government agencies, and community organizations."
For his part, Dr. Haider Alwan Hussein, Head of the National Standing Committee for Community Awareness and Guidance at the Prime Minister's Office, commended the University of Basrah for its role in organizing such seminars and workshops that address issues relevant to citizens' daily lives and build bridges between academic institutions and the executive and legislative branches.
During her address at the seminar, Member of Parliament Suzan Al-Saad noted, "We in the Council of Representatives take into consideration the realistic and scientific solutions proposed by researchers in Iraqi academic institutions and universities for developing public budgets that are commensurate with the scale of the economic challenges."
Dr. Abdul-Hussein Tawfiq Shibli, Dean of the College of Administration and Economics at the University of Basrah, also spoke, highlighting "the scientific vision presented by researchers at the University of Basrah for supporting the public budgets prepared by the executive branch without relying on oil as a primary resource, including reliance on the tourism, agriculture, and industry sectors."
The seminar featured several research papers in which researchers discussed the diagnosis of economic problems resulting from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the inability to export oil, and proposed practical solutions to contribute to addressing issues affecting the lives of Iraqi citizens and building a diversified and sustainable economy.
