University of Basrah Organizes a Scientific Workshop on Green Biotechnology
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a workshop entitled "Green Biotechnology: Innovative Solutions to Environmental and Pollution Problems."
The workshop aimed to introduce participants to the applications of green biotechnology in addressing environmental problems and enhance their ability to utilize innovative biological solutions to reduce pollution and achieve environmental sustainability.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Buthaina Mahdi Younis, included a definition of green biotechnology and its applications in environmental protection, highlighting the differences between it and traditional biotechnology. It also reviewed key innovative applications for pollution treatment, such as bioremediation, waste management (including converting organic and agricultural waste into bioenergy or biofertilizers), and the production of biodegradable plastics as an environmentally friendly alternative. The workshop also addressed reducing industrial pollution, injecting biological enzymes to treat industrial wastewater before discharge, and using biological alternatives to harmful chemicals in industrial processes. Furthermore, it touched upon the laws and ethics related to genetically modified organisms and the transfer of technology to developing communities.
