University of Basrah Organizes Workshop on Landscape Architecture and Afforestation
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a workshop entitled “Landscape Architecture and Afforestation: A Professional Responsibility for a Better Environment.”
The workshop aimed to reinforce the concept that planning and implementing landscape architecture and afforestation projects extends beyond aesthetic considerations, representing a professional and ethical responsibility that contributes to genuine environmental sustainability and enhances the quality of life in urban communities.
Delivered by a number of researchers, the workshop covered several key themes, including the integration of aesthetic design with environmental functionality. It highlighted the principles of sustainable landscape design, the development of green spaces that promote efficient water use and biodiversity, and the use of native drought-tolerant plant species. The workshop also addressed the role of afforestation in improving environmental quality, reducing pollution, and enhancing air and soil quality, in addition to emphasizing the professional responsibility of landscape engineers to adhere to sustainability standards, conduct environmental assessments prior to project implementation, and ensure regular plant maintenance to support long-term sustainability.
