Doctoral Dissertation at the University of Basrah Examines the Effects of Starvation and Refeeding on Common Carp
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah discussed a doctoral dissertation entitled “The Effects of Starvation and Refeeding on the Physiological and Nutritional Performance of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio)”.
The dissertation, presented by researcher Ibrahim Hassan Sahib, aimed to evaluate the impact of starvation and refeeding regimes on the growth, physiological performance, and nutritional efficiency of common carp, while assessing the potential of compensatory growth as a strategy to enhance fish production and reduce feed costs.
The findings demonstrated that common carp can tolerate controlled periods of feed restriction and subsequently regain normal growth rates following refeeding, thereby improving feed utilization efficiency and minimizing environmental impacts.
The dissertation recommended expanding research on sustainable feeding strategies in aquaculture to support more efficient and environmentally responsible fish production.
