PhD Dissertation at the University of Basrah Investigates the Impact of Treated Wastewater on Date Palms
A PhD dissertation at the College of Agriculture, University of Basrah, investigated the use of biologically treated wastewater for irrigating date palm offshoots of the Al-Jabjab variety.
The study, presented by researcher Ahmed Salam Jawar, aimed to evaluate the efficiency of treated water as an alternative irrigation source and to demonstrate its impact on the plant's environment, physiological and anatomical characteristics, as well as its ability to enhance tolerance to water and salinity stress.
The results showed improved growth, photosynthetic efficiency, and nutrient uptake, along with a decrease in oxidative stress indicators compared to saline water. Furthermore, more frequent irrigation intervals contributed to improved physiological performance.
The dissertation recommended the adoption of treated water within sustainable irrigation programs, while continuing to monitor water and soil quality.
