Doctoral Dissertation at the University of Basrah Examines the Classification and Evaluation of Agricultural Soils in Maysan
A doctoral dissertation at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Basrah, examined “The Classification and Evaluation of Agricultural Soils in Maysan Governorate Using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).”
The dissertation, presented by researcher Hiba Abdulhakim Hameed, aimed to classify and evaluate the agricultural soils of Maysan Governorate in accordance with the latest internationally recognized soil classification and evaluation systems.
The study included an extensive field survey involving 230 soil samples. Through this work, the researcher advanced geographical studies beyond traditional descriptive approaches by employing advanced statistical and spatial modelling. The dissertation also introduced the Maysan Agricultural Soil Quality Index and developed a smart geospatial application, Heba Soil Quality Index Tool, designed to operate within a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment.
The dissertation concluded that integrating Principal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithms with spatial analysis enables the objective derivation of environmental attribute weights through mathematical modelling, thereby reducing human bias and overcoming the limitations of conventional global soil quality indices.
