Master's Thesis at the University of Basrah Explores Improving Surfactin Production and Evaluating its Natural Antioxidant Activity
A master's thesis at the College of Agriculture, University of Basrah, explored improving the production of surfactin from a local bacterial strain and evaluating its effectiveness as a natural antioxidant.
The study, presented by researcher Zainab Hussein Abdul-Wahab, aimed to isolate and identify bacteria producing surfactant using morphological, microscopic, biochemical, and genetic tests, and to select the most efficient isolate for production.
The study also addressed improving production conditions by using oil as a carbon source and testing the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of the resulting emulsion.
The results showed the potential for using surfactin to extend the shelf life of sunflower oil, as a promising natural antioxidant and alternative to synthetic materials.
