Scientific Study at University of Basrah Proposes Sustainable Solutions for Environmental Pollution Using Computational Modeling
A joint research team from the College of Education/Qurna at University of Basrah, including Dr. Adnan Badr Ghalib, in collaboration with researchers from Urmia University in the Islamic Republic of Iran, has published a scientific study addressing environmental pollution through bioremediation and computational modeling techniques.
Published in Algal Research, an international journal by Elsevier ranked in the first quartile (Q1) with an Impact Factor of 5 and a CiteScore of 8, the study aimed to remove the hazardous textile dye Acid Blue 92 from water using the green microalga Tetradesmus obliquus. It also developed an artificial neural network (ANN) model using MATLAB to predict and optimize treatment efficiency.
The findings demonstrated that the microalgae possess a high capacity to tolerate and biologically degrade the dye. The computational model also showed excellent predictive performance, achieving a high coefficient of determination (R² = 0.93), highlighting its effectiveness in improving biological water treatment and supporting global efforts toward environmental sustainability and the green economy.
