University of Basrah Study Diagnoses the Causes of Postpartum Estrus in Local Buffalo
A master's thesis at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah, discussed "Evaluation of Postpartum Anestrus in Local Iraqi Buffalo by Combining Ultrasound Examination with Hormonal Analysis and Oxidative Stress Indicators."
The thesis, submitted by student Yahya Attia Hassan, included a field study of 91 buffalo suffering from postpartum estrus in Basra and Dhi Qar, and 5 normal buffalo as a control group. The reproductive system was examined using ultrasound, and progesterone, estradiol, and cortisol hormone levels were measured, along with antioxidant analysis (GSH-Px, CAT, SOD) and MDA.
The thesis concluded that estrus is a multifactorial condition, with heat stress and malnutrition contributing to its development. Ultrasound proved highly effective in diagnosing its causes, supported by hormonal and biochemical results.
The thesis recommended routine use of transrectal ultrasound for early diagnosis, improved post-calving buffalo nutrition, provision of cooling and shade to reduce heat stress, and early treatment of uterine infections.
