University of Basrah Examines the Effects of Melatonin and Ginseng on the Reproductive Performance of Arabi Ewes
A master’s thesis at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah, examined A Comparative Study of the Effects of Melatonin and Ginseng on the Reproductive Performance of Arabi Ewes.
The thesis, submitted by researcher Abdullah Qasim Majeed, evaluated the effects of melatonin and ginseng on the levels of key reproductive hormones, including FSH, LH, and oestrogen, over different periods, while monitoring reproductive performance indicators in ewes.
The study concluded that treatment with melatonin and ginseng contributed to improved fertility and increased hormone levels, with melatonin showing a notable advantage in increasing twinning rates and the number of offspring per ewe by stimulating multiple ovulations and reducing oxidative stress.
The thesis recommended the use of ear implants as an alternative method of administration and determining optimal melatonin dosages. It also recommended investigating other antioxidants and nutritional supplements, as well as examining the synergistic effects of the two compounds to improve ram fertility.
