Master's Thesis at the University of Basrah Investigates Zambian Wilt and Methods of Control
A master's thesis at the College of Agriculture, University of Basrah, investigated the isolation and identification of the fungi causing Zambian wilt disease in ornamental plants and the possibility of controlling it using biological control agents and plant extracts.
The thesis, submitted by researcher Zahraa Abdul-Imam Majeed, aimed to isolate and identify the pathogen methodologically and molecularly, and to evaluate the efficacy of biological control agents and Moringa leaf extract in reducing infection without the use of chemical pesticides.
The results showed that the identified fungus is the main causative agent of the disease, possessing high pathogenicity, while the biological treatments demonstrated clear efficacy in reducing infection.
The study recommended using an aqueous extract of Moringa and the biological control agent Trichoderma to control the disease and promote safe and sustainable plant growth.
