PhD Dissertation at the University of Basrah Investigates Parasites and Fungi Affecting Ornamental Fish
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah discussed a PhD dissertation on a taxonomic study of external parasites and fungi affecting certain ornamental fish species, along with a comparative therapeutic assessment of pure and nano-chitosan gels for treating fungal ulcers.
The dissertation, presented by researcher Umeit Faisal Mohammed, aimed to identify the parasites and fungi associated with ornamental fish and evaluate the efficacy of pure and nano-chitosan in treating fungal infections.
The study examined 140 specimens representing 23 species of imported ornamental fish. The findings revealed the first records in Iraq of several parasites, fungi, and new host species, while nano-chitosan demonstrated greater efficacy in inhibiting fungal growth and accelerating the healing of skin ulcers.
The study recommended strengthening quarantine procedures and health monitoring, and adopting nano-chitosan as an environmentally friendly treatment.
