University of Basrah Investigates Molecular Detection of Fungi and Their Toxins in Poultry Feed
A master's thesis at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah, investigated "Molecular Detection of Fungi and Their Toxins in Poultry Feed and Its Products."
The thesis, submitted by student Waroud Nasser Abbas, included the detection of fungi and mycotoxins in animal feed and products using molecular and laboratory techniques, and an evaluation of their impact on the productivity indicators of laying hens and their implications for public health.
The study concluded that mycotoxins can be transferred from contaminated feed to poultry tissues and eggs, with a notable prevalence of Aspergillus and Fusarium species, confirming their direct impact on food safety.
The thesis recommended strengthening periodic monitoring of feed, implementing good storage and manufacturing practices, and tightening controls on animal products to ensure the safety of human consumption.
