The "Youth, Makers of Life" project is among the leading projects adopted by the Cultural Center. The project was launched in phases, including identifying young people's interests and talents, organizing training courses and workshops, and ultimately presenting their creative output to the community. The project reflects the center's vision of investing in young talent and providing a knowledge-based and creative environment that helps young people develop their potential and transform their talents into achievements that can be felt in society. The Talented Students Project underscores the center's commitment to nurturing talent and creative energies by providing suitable spaces to showcase artistic, literary, and cultural works. It also encourages talented individuals to participate in university and community activities, including the film "Red in Bold" by the talented student Duaa Al-Halfi, the cartoon drawing exhibition by student Fatima Al-Mutairi, and the "Artistic Brush" exhibition by student Alia Majid.
Regarding the project to integrate people with disabilities into society and the university's role in development and rehabilitation, the center prioritizes the principle of cultural participation for all. This includes supporting the participation of people with disabilities in university, cultural, and artistic activities, which contributes to their integration into the university environment and highlights their abilities and talents. This approach affirms that university culture is not exclusive to any particular group but rather an open space for diverse talents and abilities to participate and create. This is demonstrated by the opening of sewing and carpentry projects, a fast-food cafeteria, and a kiosk project for people with disabilities selling local and imported goods.
We also highlight the "Basmat Tifl" (Child's Smile) project and the initiative to support children with thalassemia. Among the initiatives targeting children is the "Basmat Tifl Lil-Khamis" (Smile for a Child) project, implemented by the Cultural Center's owners. This involved distributing gifts to children at the Thalassemia Center in the Children's Hospital, aiming to bring joy to their hearts and alleviate their suffering. Another initiative, "Basmat Tifl Lil-Khamis" (Child's Smile for Five), which ran for several seasons, brought together one hundred children to create a painting in a free space, expressing their thoughts and feelings.
Supporting women and developing their capabilities represents another aspect of the center's community engagement. This is achieved through events that provide women with a platform to express their creativity and participate in cultural, artistic, and awareness programs. Among its most recent events is the annual poetry festival celebrating the births of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during the month of Sha'ban. This festival combines cultural presentations, research papers, poetry readings, and cultural competitions in an atmosphere that celebrates literature, poetry, and cultural values.
Through its evenings, mornings, and cultural gatherings, the center is committed to providing a platform for poets and literary talents, fostering dialogue. These include the University Cultural Forum, the Poetry Readings Forum, and the Basra Forum for Culture and Art.
The cultural center boasts a significant legacy in theater and the arts, having hosted theatrical performances, artistic events, and diverse exhibitions over the years. These include plays such as "My Face," "A Drop of Rain," "A Day at School," "Indexing," "Women of This Time," and "Whispers."
The center's activities also encompass nurturing talent in drawing, calligraphy, photography, and various other arts. It also supports the theatrical and literary works of young people, such as the art exhibition "A Brushstroke of Art" by the talented artist Anwar Abdullah, who has disabilities.
The center's activities extend beyond the university, encompassing a wider range of initiatives, including field visits to various institutions such as the Chaldean Archdiocese of Basra and the South, the Basra Police Command, a nursing home, and other organizations.
In a move reflecting its commitment to keeping pace with media and technological advancements, the Cultural Center launched a mobile podcast program as a new platform for delivering knowledge and culture to the public. The program features a selection of academics, scientists, and writers from the University of Basrah, with episodes recorded in various locations to reflect the diverse cultural and scientific environments within the province. This initiative represents a step towards expanding the audience benefiting from cultural activities, moving the event from the physical hall to the digital realm and making knowledge accessible to a wider audience. Additionally, the center offers a program of open cultural spaces at the planetarium.
The Cultural Center welcomes students and visitors through events and programs that combine culture, knowledge, and educational experience.
