Master's Thesis at the University of Basrah Investigates the Efficiency of Strip Drip Irrigation for Wheat
A master's thesis at the College of Agriculture, University of Basrah, investigated the effect of operating pressure, irrigation level, and pipe spacing on the properties of sandy soil and the growth of wheat crops using a strip drip irrigation system.
The thesis, submitted by researcher Ahmed Zaid Mahdi, aimed to evaluate the hydraulic parameters, moisture and salinity distribution, and identify the best interventions to increase productivity and improve water use efficiency under the climatic conditions of southern Iraq. The results demonstrated the system's importance in conserving water and improving the root zone environment.
The study recommended adopting high operating pressures, supplying pipes at both ends, and limiting pipe spacing to between 20 and 30 cm. The treatment with a pressure of 1.25 bar, a spacing of 20 cm, and an irrigation level of 80% of evapotranspiration achieved the highest water efficiency and economic performance.
