Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Explores the Use of Artificial Intelligence to Diagnose Palm Diseases
A Master’s thesis at the College of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Basrah, entitled Detection and Classification of Date Palm Frond Diseases Using Deep Neural Networks, examined the importance of employing artificial intelligence techniques for the early detection of Dubas bug infestations and monitoring their development on date palm fronds.
The thesis, presented by researcher Maryam Abdul-Halim Matar, addressed the key challenges associated with applying deep neural networks, particularly the difficulty of detecting infestations, limited and imbalanced datasets, while also reviewing data-processing approaches and methods for improving model performance.
The findings demonstrated the effectiveness of deep neural networks in classifying palm frond conditions into four main categories: Bug, Mixed, Honey, and Healthy, contributing to efforts to protect agricultural production.
