University of Basrah Participates in Technical Workshop to Strengthen the Resilience of the Hawizeh Marshes at the Bahr Al-Ulum Forum in Baghdad
The Dean of the College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah, Dr. Sarmad Ghazi Al-Shawi, along with a number of the college’s faculty members, participated in a technical workshop entitled “Human and Biodiversity Resilience Project: The Great Hawizeh Marsh.”
Held at the Bahr Al-Ulum Forum in Baghdad, the workshop featured scientific lectures addressing the impact of water inundation on production systems and the resilience of local communities, as well as measures required to protect the marshes and enhance their sustainability.
The scientific contributions emphasized the importance of adopting an integrated and adaptive environmental and economic management approach based on gradual inundation guided by environmental monitoring, involving local communities in supporting fisheries and buffalo husbandry, and strengthening cross-border data exchange and climate financing.
