University of Basrah Explores Political Fiction in the Victorian Era
A master's thesis at the College of Education for Humanities at the University of Basrah explored "The Political Novel in the Victorian Era: A Critical Study of Selected Novels by Elizabeth Gaskell."
The thesis, submitted by student Hisham Sahib Mithkal, aimed to reread and analyze the political and ideological discourse in the literature of Victorian writer Elizabeth Gaskell, specifically in her novels "Mary Barton" and "North and South," by applying a comprehensive theoretical framework that combines New Historicism and Marxist feminism, represented by the theory of social reproduction.
The study included a comprehensive critical review tracing the intellectual shift in reading Gaskell's literature from biographical approaches to political analysis. It also discussed the concepts of discourse and power, mechanisms of subversion and containment, and deconstructed the economic and social position of the feminist figures.
