University of Basrah Holds Scientific Seminar on the Invasion of African Catfish
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah held a scientific seminar entitled “The Invasion of African Catfish into Iraqi Water Bodies: Environmental Challenges and Integrated Management Mechanisms,” attended by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Sarmad Ghazi Mohammed Al-Shawi; Head of the Department of Fisheries, Prof. Dr. Khalida Salim Khudair; and a number of faculty members, researchers, and representatives of government institutions.
Through three scientific lectures, the seminar addressed the risks associated with the spread of this invasive species and its impact on biodiversity. It also reviewed its morphological characteristics in comparison with local fish species, as well as ways to utilize it in the production of animal feed and fishmeal.
The seminar recommended establishing a national committee to oversee the issue, supporting field surveys, organizing selective fishing campaigns, and providing incentives for fishermen to help curb its spread and protect the aquatic environment.
