University of Basrah Faculty Member Publishes Research in an International Journal
Dr. Manaf Qasim Jaber, a faculty member at the Marine Science Centre, University of Basrah, has co-authored a research paper entitled “Radon-based fault detection in marine sediments of Khor Abdullah: Integrating geophysical and statistical approaches,” which was published in Physics and Chemistry of the Earth. The journal focuses on diverse studies of nature and its significance in scientific thought and modern design. It is ranked in the first quartile (Q1) of the Scopus database, with an impact factor of 4.6, and is published by the Netherlands-based international publishing house Elsevier.
The study highlighted the rich diversity of the natural world and environmental dynamics, particularly by linking ecosystems with evolutionary thermodynamics in pursuit of satisfactory solutions for sustainable development.
The significance of the study lies in its integration, for the first time within the research framework, of radiological evidence from radioactive isotopes with geological evidence in the Iraqi marine environment. Radon-222 (²²²Rn) concentrations were measured using solid-state nuclear track detectors, such as CR-39, alongside geophysical evidence to detect concealed faults in the marine sediments of the Khor Abdullah region.
This approach provides a cost-effective and rapid tool for mapping hidden subsurface structures concealed beneath thick Quaternary deposits. It also supports hydrocarbon exploration, the assessment of modern tectonic hazards, and coastal infrastructure planning in the northern Arabian Gulf.
