A doctoral dissertation at the College of Engineering, University of Basrah, examined an integrated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) approach to assessing the impact of land-use and land-cover changes on groundwater potential in Basrah, Iraq.
The dissertation, submitted by student Issam Mohammed Ali Abdul-Kareem, emphasized the need to diversify water sources for different purposes rather than relying entirely on a single source, such as surface water, which is experiencing rapid deterioration in quality.
The dissertation comprised five chapters addressing the importance of utilizing groundwater for agricultural and domestic purposes, provided that this vital water resource is managed effectively and sustainably by limiting excessive quantitative depletion and the qualitative pollution affecting the aquifer.
