University of Basrah Holds Awareness Seminar to Mark World Rabies Day
The Department of Science and Technology Parks at the University of Basrah, in cooperation with the College of Veterinary Medicine, held an awareness seminar entitled “Rabies within the One Health Framework: Prevention Is a Shared Responsibility,” coinciding with World Rabies Day, observed annually on September 28.
The seminar aimed to raise health and veterinary awareness of the risks associated with rabies and ways to prevent the disease, while also promoting the One Health concept and emphasizing that preventing and controlling zoonotic and communicable diseases requires coordinated scientific and community efforts.
The seminar, delivered by Sarah Salim Mohammed, a faculty member and Head of the Rehabilitation, Employment, and Follow-up Unit at the College of Veterinary Medicine, provided a comprehensive overview of the causes and symptoms of rabies, its modes of transmission, and the immediate preventive measures and proper procedures to follow in cases of animal bites or potential exposure. It also highlighted the importance of comprehensive animal vaccination campaigns and the integration of public awareness and veterinary efforts to curb the spread of the disease and ensure a safe and healthy environment.
For his part, Dr. Ridwan Abdul-Wahab Abdul-Razzaq, Director of the Department, said that marking World Rabies Day is particularly important, noting that organizing such seminars reflects the University’s commitment to its academic and community responsibilities in promoting health awareness and helping prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases. He added that these efforts focus on preventive solutions and strengthening partnerships between educational and health institutions to create a safe environment free from health risks.
