University of Basrah Researchers Publish Research in a Journal Indexed in the AGRIS International Database
Researchers from the Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah—Dr. Abbas Jassim Toman, Dr. Falah Marouf Mutlaq, and Dr. Ali Taha Yassin—published a research paper titled "Expansion of the Invasive African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus (Burchell)) in Southern Iraq" in the Iraqi Journal of Aquaculture. The journal focuses on publishing original research and studies related to aquaculture, marine fisheries, aquatic environment management, and water pollution. It is indexed in the AGRIS international database of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The research aimed to document and monitor the expansion of the invasive African catfish species in the aquatic environment of southern Iraq and to assess its environmental impacts.
The research documented a new appearance of the invasive African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in the lower reaches of the Tigris River in Basra, thus expanding the geographic range of this species to southern Iraq. This raises concerns This expansion raises concerns about potential impacts on local biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics. The presence of this invasive species could disrupt the existing ecological balance, potentially leading to unforeseen consequences for native species and their natural habitats.
