University of Basrah Outlines Roadmap for Improving Animal Feed and Enhancing Animal Health
With the participation of a group of specialists and those interested in the veterinary and agricultural fields, the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah organized a specialized workshop addressing methods for improving roughage and its direct impact on animal health.
The workshop included a lecture presented by several faculty members from the Department of Veterinary Public Health, who defined the concept of roughage and its fundamental importance in ruminant nutrition, while also reviewing the motivations for improving its nutritional value and optimizing its use.
The workshop witnessed discussions on various methods of feed treatment, including physical, chemical, and biological methods, in addition to treatment with alkaline substances and the use of urea. It also covered fermentation techniques, silage production, and the utilization of agricultural waste and local feed sources, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each method and its impact on production performance.
This initiative comes as part of the college's efforts to enhance scientific and applied knowledge in animal nutrition and support the optimal investment of local feed resources to promote animal health and increase productivity.
