Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Examines the Simulation and Optimization of Heat Exchanger Networks
A master’s thesis at the College of Engineering, University of Basrah, examined the simulation and optimization of heat exchanger networks operating in the oil refining industry.
The thesis, presented by student Mahmoud Kareem Ahmed, aimed to reduce energy consumption in crude oil distillation units by maximizing heat recovery between process streams. However, many existing refinery networks operate below optimal thermal performance because they rely on configurations inherited from their original designs.
The thesis comprised four chapters, in which the student examined the thermal performance and retrofit of the first crude oil preheating train in the atmospheric distillation unit at Basrah Refinery, operated by the South Refineries Company.
