University of Basrah Celebrates International Day for Geological Diversity
In accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to commemorate International Day for Geological Diversity, designated by UNESCO on October 6th, the University of Basrah organized a workshop entitled "International Day for Geological Diversity" in the conference hall of the College of Engineering.
The workshop included a lecture by Professor Mohammed Lazem Lafteh, who explained the concept of geological diversity and its types. He clarified that it encompasses the diversity of materials, including rocks, minerals, and fossils, as well as geological formations and phenomena such as islands, valleys, caves, deserts, and oil wells, which represent a natural record of Earth's history and evolution.
The lecturer also addressed the relationship between geology and civil engineering and petroleum and gas engineering, highlighting the importance of this diversity in scientific and applied fields and its role in supporting sustainable development and protecting geological heritage.
The symposium was attended by the head of the Basra Academics Syndicate, Dr. Dhiaa Al-Fakiki, along with a number of university professors and students from various scientific departments. The event included scholarly presentations and a question-and-answer session that enriched the symposium's topic and underscored the importance of commemorating such international events in raising geological awareness.
