University of Basrah President Discusses Dry Gas Pipeline Route Project at Karma Ali Campus with Parliamentary and Oil Sector Delegation
The President of the University of Basrah, Prof. Dr. Aqeel Fadhil Hamad Al-Dahan, received a parliamentary delegation accompanied by Mustafa Abdul Nabi Shaddad, Head of the Southern Operations Authority at the State Company for Oil Pipelines and Chief Physicist. The meeting was attended by the university’s assistants for scientific and administrative affairs.
The visit aimed to discuss and consult on a proposed dry gas pipeline route passing through the university’s designated right-of-way areas at the Karma Ali Colleges Complex and extending towards the Najibiya Power Plant to ensure a stable energy supply to the facility.
During the meeting, the technical delegation outlined the project details, explaining that the new pipeline would extend for 900 metres within the university’s right-of-way areas, replacing the deteriorated existing pipeline along a newly designated route. The project will employ advanced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technology, allowing the pipeline to be installed at a depth of approximately 19 metres below ground level. The system is designed for an operational lifespan of 40 years without requiring human intervention, thereby meeting high standards of public safety and protecting the lives of citizens and university personnel.
For his part, Prof. Al-Dahan affirmed the university’s commitment to supporting service-oriented and strategic projects that directly benefit citizens and strengthen the governorate’s energy sector. He also stressed the importance of safeguarding human health, the environment, and the structural integrity of the academic campus. Accordingly, he directed the formation of a specialized engineering and technical committee to assess the project’s various aspects and submit urgent recommendations to the Ministry, in preparation for presenting them to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research during his anticipated visit to Basrah Governorate ahead of the central graduation ceremony.
