University of Basrah Organizes Course on Microfossil Extraction Techniques
⠀
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a specialized training course titled "Technical Skills for Extracting and Separating Microfossils and Microfauna from Recent and Ancient Sediments."
⠀
The course aimed to equip participants with practical skills required to efficiently and accurately process sediment samples and extract microfossil and microfauna content, supporting environmental, stratigraphic, and paleobiodiversity studies.
⠀
Presented by Dr. Zainab Abdul-Redha Hameed, the course covered two main tracks. The first track addressed recent sediments, focusing on sampling techniques, washing, filtering, and separating microfauna (such as foraminifera and ostracods) using appropriate microscopes and reagents. The second track focused on ancient sediments, detailing chemical and mechanical treatment methods to extract microfossils (including foraminifera, pollen grains, and siliceous microfossils), alongside techniques for separation, sorting, documentation, and photomicrography.
