University of Basrah Organizes Course on Aquatic Plants and Their Environmental Impacts
⠀
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a specialized training course titled "Aquatic Plants and Their Impacts on the Aquatic Environment."
⠀
The course aimed to introduce participants to various types of aquatic flora and their ecological importance, build their capacity to evaluate both positive and negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems, and enable them to propose sustainable management strategies.
⠀
Presented by Dr. Jihad Makki Hameed and Dr. Iman Abdullah Abdul-Aali, the course covered the classification of floating, submerged, and emergent aquatic plants with relevant examples. It addressed their role in improving water quality, generating oxygen, absorbing pollutants through phytoremediation, providing shelter and food for aquatic organisms, and supporting biodiversity. Additionally, it examined the adverse effects of overgrowth—such as harmful blooms, oxygen depletion, and navigation or irrigation obstruction—while exploring related phenomena including eutrophication and invasive species, as well as monitoring, management, and control methods such as mechanical and biological removal.
