University of Basrah Organizes Course on Oxidation-Reduction Potential

The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a specialized training course titled "Oxidation-Reduction Potential."

The course aimed to enable participants to understand the fundamental principles of Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP), master its measurement and calibration techniques, and comprehend its practical applications in water treatment, environmental monitoring, and related fields.

Presented by Dr. Bassam Ashour Rasheed and Dr. Inas Qasim Mohammed, the course covered the definition of ORP and its relationship to the oxidizing and reducing properties of solutions. It detailed the measurement principles using combination electrodes (platinum electrode and reference electrode), calibration using standard solutions, temperature correction methods, and the interpretation of readings—noting that higher positive values indicate stronger oxidizing capacity. Additionally, the course explored practical case studies, including monitoring disinfection processes in wastewater treatment and drinking water purification.
