University of Basrah Participates in Completing the First Inventory of Heritage Buildings in the City
The College of Engineering at the University of Basrah has completed the "Inventory of Heritage Buildings in the City of Basra" project in cooperation with UNESCO, Loughborough University (UK), and the Basra Antiquities and Heritage Inspectorate. This project is part of UNESCO's initiatives to revitalize the cities of Basra and Mosul, and is funded by the European Union.
The project began at the end of 2023 and involved several phases, including data collection, review, evaluation, and map updates. It culminated in a detailed documentation of more than 160 heritage buildings in both Arabic and English, with links to Google Maps. This inventory represents the first comprehensive list of heritage buildings in Basra and serves as a primary resource for the city's architectural heritage.
The team from the College of Engineering included Dr. Hamed Hayab Samir and Dr. Farah Ahmed Dhiab, along with experts from UNESCO, Loughborough University, and the Basra Antiquities and Heritage Inspectorate.
Work is currently underway to establish the "Basra Digital Heritage Platform," which is expected to be completed by the end of this year, making the inventory accessible to everyone.
