The University of Basrah in Arab Forum for SDGs
The University was participated in the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development for the year 2021-2022, which was held by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in cooperation with the League of Arab States and United Nations bodies working in the Arab region.
The participation of the University of Basrah included emphasizing that the university’s vision is based on its policies in achieving sustainable development goals, based on the foundations of the tripartite partnership between the state, the private sector and civil society, and enabling all stakeholders to participate in the planning, implementation and control processes, and to exercise an appropriate role, according to their capabilities. In those goals.
In this context, the paper on the localization of sustainable development goals from the perspective of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research included a number of strategic goals, including quality education, providing learning opportunities, eliminating poverty, and developing university programs to reduce the phenomenon, achieve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture, industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
The President of the University of Basrah, Professor Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, pointed out that the university is striving to implement the 17 United Nations resolutions, which are considered a priority for the university, as the university has adopted all development decisions. For example: In its new buildings, the university relies on alternative energy and solar lighting energy as an alternative to electrical energy. Smart buildings were adopted in developing university buildings. In addition to its effective and permanent contribution to achieving sustainable development decisions in Basra Governorate and Iraq, the university is considered a permanent member of the development committees in the governorate and in Iraq.
